Types of Carpet Flooring

Carpet floors refer to floor coverings that are made of piles attached to their backing. Pile is made from either natural wool or manmade fibers like polypropylene, acrylic, polyester.  Carpet industry is increasingly flourishing today with a number of countries producing unique and unparallel carpets. In addition to obvious aesthetic values of carpet floors, they feel great to walk on.  Today carpets’ stain protection system is so good that even children and pet animals are no longer a worry. Carpet floors are classified mainly into four types in connection with their construction processes.

Woven carpet is the most expensive type of carpet produced on a loom. Normally its pile is constructed in the form of Plush or Berber. Plush carpet has a cut pile while Berber carpet has a loop pile. Some manufacturers combine these two processes and make “cut and loop carpets”. The advantage of woven carpet is that its threads are made in a slew of colors with several complex patterns. But the drawback is that woven carpets may not maintain pile patters in a fairly accurate manner.

Knotted carpets are labor intensive that are generally made of pure wool. While making it on frames, the first weft is made by tying the woolen yarn on the warps and putting a cotton thread between two rows of warps. Then the second weft interconnects the warps across each row in order to keep the knots in place. This process is repeated until the entire carpet is completed.

Needle-felt carpets are the most durable carpets. Electrostatic attraction of every synthetic fiber is used for manufacturing these carpets. They are suitable for high traffic places like hotels and clubs.

Tufted carpet is produced with the help of machinery and last for a longer period of time. It is made of either natural or synthetic materials thus adding to its stain-protection capability. Here the first process is to make tufts. It is an assortment of yarn fibers which are drawn through the surface of fabric base. Then on tufting machines needles are used to push the fiber through the base material. An already programmed machine produces pile tufts in multiple patterns and texture according to one’s choice.

Nylon, olefin, acrylic, polyester, wool, and small strands are used for making carpets. All have distinct qualities suitable for varying places and ambiance.

Patio Versus Deck

So you know you want to bag that perfect outdoor living site in your backyard, but you haven’t decided whether or not it will be a patio or it will be a deck. They’re both grand options, but a patio is probably the best contrivance to go. This is especially fair for the do it yourself crowd.

Unless you have lots of carpentry experience and have mastered the art of measures and miters, working with wood or composite decking materials can be quite a challenge. Of course it always looks easy, but it’s also easy to get mistakes when cutting all the wood. These mistakes can add up and be quite costly due to wasted time and material.

On the other hand, if you settle a relatively simple pattern, laying a stone, brick, or paver patio can be mammoth simpler for the average do-it-yourselfer. Obviously, the more square the pattern, the fewer cuts are critical. This makes for a fairly straightforward installation process that can be done over a weekend or two if working with the gracious nefarious. Read the rest of this entry »
